Selenium is a quasi metal with gray metallic luster. The chemical symbol is Se. Selenium is in the Group VI a (element 34) of the fourth cycle in the periodic table of chemical elements. The melting point is 217 ℃. The boiling point is 684.9 ℃. Among the six known solid allotypes, three kinds of selenium crystals (α monoclinic, β monoclinic, and gray triangular crystals) are the most important. Among the selenium crystals, the gray hexagonal system is the most stable with a density of 4.81g/cm3. Selenium is brittle and toxic. It is soluble in carbon disulfide, benzene and quinoline. Selenium can conduct electricity, and its conductivity changes rapidly with light intensity.
