Stainless Steel Grades Standard Comparison Chart - ASTM / JIS / ISO / EN

Stainless steel is the abbreviation of stainless acid resistant steel. Generally, we call stainless steel a steel that is resistant to weak corrosive media such as air, steam and water or has stainless property; The steel that is resistant to chemical corrosion medium (acid, alkali, salt and other chemical etching) is called acid resistant steel.

Due to the difference in chemical composition, their corrosion resistance is different. Ordinary stainless steel is generally not resistant to chemical medium corrosion, while acid resistant steel is generally stainless. The term "stainless steel" not only refers to one kind of stainless steel, but also refers to more than 100 kinds of industrial stainless steels. Each type of stainless steel developed has good performance in its specific application field.

Stainless steel can be divided into austenitic stainless steel, austenitic ferritic (duplex) stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel and precipitation hardening stainless steel. Their standard definitions are as follows:

Stainless Steel

Steels with stainless steel and corrosion resistance as the main characteristics, and with the content of at least 10.5% and the maximum carbon content of not more than 1.2%.

Austenitic Stainless Steel

The matrix is mainly austenitic structure (y phase) with face centered cubic crystal structure, which is nonmagnetic, and is mainly strengthened (and may lead to certain magnetism) by cold working.

Austenitic Ferritic (Duplex) Stainless Steel

The matrix is a kind of stainless steel that has both austenite and ferrite structures (the content of less phase is generally greater than 15%), is magnetic, and can be strengthened by cold working.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

The matrix is mainly ferrite structure (a phase) with body centered cubic crystal structure, which is magnetic, and generally cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but can be slightly strengthened by cold working.

Martensitic Stainless Steel

The matrix is martensitic structure, magnetic, and its mechanical properties can be adjusted through heat treatment.

Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

Stainless steel whose matrix is austenitic or martensitic structure and can be hardened (strengthened) by precipitation hardening (also known as age hardening) treatment.

Due to the different definitions of stainless steel standards in the world, various countries have formulated their own stainless steel grade standards. Although the standard grades are different, the chemical composition is basically the same. Therefore, this paper refers to the standard grades and approximate grades of major countries in the world, combs and sorts out the comparison table of stainless steel grade standards. It can be used as a reference.
