The Performance and Influence of Tungsten in Steel

Tungsten is a metallic element. Its atomic number is 74, atomic weight is 183.84. Tungsten is steel gray or silver white, with high hardness, high melting point, free from air erosion under normal temperature. Tungsten is mainly used for manufacturing filament and high-speed cutting alloy steel, superhard mold, also used for optical instruments, chemical instruments. Tungsten can be doped in some metal materials to improve the performance of metal materials. Today I want to share with you some performance and influence of tungsten in steel.

The effect of tungsten in steel is mainly reflected in microstructure, heat treatment, mechanical properties, physical, chemical and technological properties. The details are as follows:

1、 Effect of tungsten on Microstructure and heat treatment of steel
① Tungsten is a refractory metal with the highest melting point (3387 ℃), which is in the same family with chromium and molybdenum in the periodic table of elements. The behavior in steel is similar to that in molybdenum, i.e. the austenite phase area is reduced, and it is a strong carbide forming element, part of which is solid soluble in iron.

② The effect of tungsten on Hardenability of steel is not as strong as that of molybdenum and chromium. When the special carbides of tungsten exist, the hardenability and hardenability of steel will be reduced.

③ The special carbides of tungsten prevent the grain growth of steel and reduce the superheat sensitivity of steel.

④ Tungsten significantly improves the tempering stability of steel.

2、 Effect of tungsten on mechanical properties of steel
① Tungsten improves the fire resistance of steel, carbide is very hard, so the wear resistance of steel is improved and the steel has certain hot hardness.

② The effect of increasing creep resistance of steel at high temperature is not as strong as that of molybdenum.

3、 Effect of tungsten on physical, chemical and technological properties of steel
① It can improve the density of steel and reduce the thermal conductivity of steel.

② The coercive force and residual magnetic induction of the steel are significantly increased.

③ Tungsten has little effect on the corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation resistance of steel, and the non peeling property of steel containing tungsten decreases significantly at high temperature.

④ The high temperature plasticity of the steel containing tungsten is low, the deformation resistance is high and the hot working performance is poor.

⑤ High alloy tungsten steel has segregation of fusible phase and high forging temperature in the as cast state, and it is necessary to prevent the ink color fracture caused by graphitization of carbon in high carbon tungsten steel.

4、 Application of tungsten in steel
Mainly used for tool steel, such as high speed steel and hot forging die steel. It can be used for carburizing steel and quenched and tempered steel when there are special needs.
